As we all know, every kid goes through this stage. When they are too young, they can’t express their emotions, and when something which they don’t like happens around them, it comes out through activities like hitting and biting. It is very important to tame this behavior in the beginning itself. Some times we feel, as they grow up they will learn to behave automatically. But that is not the truth. If we don’t nip this misbehavior in the bud, as they grow up this behavior grows as screaming and back talking and ultimately our beloved one would turn into a spoilt kid.
Here are some tips to tame this misbehavior
- Pick your battles: Give the small things small attention and big things big attention. Every little thing we interrupt them, they will very less likely to listen to our words when we really want them to. So we need not scold them for every little mischief. That way we will be happier and calmer – as our child will be happier calmer and better behaved too.
- Provide unconditional love: children need to know we love them. Every day even when they have done wrong.
- Blame the behavior: There is a difference between blaming the behavior and blaming the child. When we try to correct our child during misbehavior, we need to be very particular about explaining the child, what has gone wrong. It is his action of fault and not the child. We could say, “I love you, but you can’t bite people”.

- Be developmentally appropriate: On the journey towards teaching good manners, sometimes we think of our child more advanced than he really is. Many younger children can’t understand a request because it involves thinking or listening skills that they have not developed yet.
- End the power struggle: If power struggle starts then winning becomes more attractive than listening and cooperating. Don’t give opportunity for power struggles. The child starts thinking he has to win the struggle, and debate continues.
- Divert the Attention: If the child gets very angry on some situation and hitting. Then let the child not get into that kind of situation. As parents, we would know what turns our child on and what turns off. Talk about things which he likes to hear and when he calms down completely let him know about the misbehavior. Shouting and hitting is not at all a solution.
- Just go with the flow: At this age, they only want to check their limits. They want to explore as much as possible. They will have so much enthusiasm that, adults words don’t matter for them. If we become angry, then we end up showing it out in action, that’s what they would learn in future. Just understand their innocence.
- Hunger, sickness, sleep and fatigue: These also lead to poor behavior. First we need to take child’s physical condition into consideration.

Every mother wants their kid to be good eater. Nobody’s child eats a perfect, totally by the book diet. To be healthy they don’t have to. If your child has one of these issues, don’t worry. There is always an alternate way to get him the nutrients he needs.
Here are some tips to fix your picky eaters eating problems:
- Take it lightly: We cant force our child to do anything, especially make her eat , so just stop trying. Put the food on her plate and eat food from your plate yourself. But if it stays in her plate don’t push her and don’t push over it. kids will not become ill or suffer permanently if they refuse a meal or two. But we, parents some times act as though they might become week and die.
- The intense aversion towards every vegetable: Vegetables contain healthy plant compounds as well as immune boosting nutrients like vitamin A and C. vegetables maintain fat mass and increases bone mass. Carrots, spinach, radish are among few vegetables kids hate the most. Here are some alternates for vegetables. Spinach is rich in vitamin A – so dried apricots and mangoes. Green Pease, broccoli – citrus fruits like orange or pineapple. They are all great choices for snack or desert. Kids tend to eat more when they are served before lunch rather than during the meal time. This is good tip to follow.

- Family dinner: Kids who eat dinner with their parents have healthier diets, better vocabularies. If not possible every time, try to have dinner all together at least twice a week. One thing we should keep in mind that, little kids cant sit at a dinner table for a very long time. We can make a rule that If he has done with his dinner, he can leave the table but he cant hang around nearby, playing and talking and distracting the rest of them. He has to go to the living room and entertain himself. Most of the cases what a preschooler wants is our company and attention, so he will stay in his seat and finish his dinner. Another point over here is .. its not a good habit to watch TV or answer the phone during dinner/lunch time. So the elders need to follow this.
- Puts ketchup on every thing: Typical ketchup is sugary and salty, which is not that good for their health. For a lot of kids ketchup allows them to expand the variety of foods they will eat. So we could try carrots with ketchup or any other vegetable which they don’t like to eat, spice that up with ketchup.
- Spice things up. Kids have delicate taste buds. But that does not mean they need to be served a steady diet without spice. We should avoid very spicy food but other than that we should try to make the same items for kids as we prepare for elders.
- Not eating Vegetables: This food group is traditionally mom’s biggest hurdle, who tries to inculcate healthy eating in kids. Getting kids to eat vegetables requires begging and threats, tactics that quickly backfire. Because once kids realize that we really really want them to eat vegetables, refusing to do so becomes a power struggle and they will always win. We should try making recipes that integrate vegetables into delicious main dishes such as beans in spiced chicken biryani. When we use vegetables as a side dish, place them on the table first, when kids are the hungriest. Usually they have swallowed them down by the time the rest of the meal arrives.
- Limited choice: Offering child a limited choice is often enough to end the power struggles. Give two side dishes with vegetables and he has to select the one among them.
- Refusal to drink milk: Milk helps kid’s bodies and bones grow strong as it offers 4 nutrients – calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D. Also it helps in maintaining a healthy weight. If the child is refusing to drink milk, we can meet his calcium needs by other food like Red kidney beans, chick peas boiled, Almonds, cheese, yogurt. Vitamin D can be found in fish and eggs.
- Give straight forward praise: Even if he takes 1 bite of something new, praise them like “ Its great that u tried the chili today”.
- Dinner time Story telling: For very young once like one and half to 3 year old kids, story telling works the best while having dinner. We could even use a raised/high chair and make them sit on that, so that we could handle them easily.
- If every thing fails, use bribery: Don’t have to be guilty to use this option. More often tried and tested briberies are: “No desert if you don’t eat a fair amount of dinner”. “No seconds if you don’t finish the first.” And the second one is his favorite.
